This traditional property in a village near Holt was the subject of a complete renovation. This included moving the main pedestrian entrance to the opposite side of the house, which had previously been a small area of grass surrounded by overgrown hedges.
The design had to accommodate some awkward changes of level, with the road sloping downhill and the new door being considerably above road level, as could more easily be seen once the hedges were removed..
A level area outside the new double doors was constructed with a brick retaining wall. The rest of the site was graded so as to provide as gentle a slope as possible, and enclosed with new low brick and flint retaining walls. A gently curving access path was made with gravel and sleeper steps.
The garden was planted in a cottage style to provide interest throughout the season, and indulge the owner’s love of texture and colour. The image above shows Alliums, Eurphorbia and a Geranium In May
The catmint is at the peak of it’s main season in June, along with Alchemilla and a pretty pale pink Geranium. Grasses are an important element, especially later in the Summer.
In August, a dark orange-brown Helenium is a feature, along with pale yellow daylilies and purple salvia
The colour continues into September with the catmint making a second appearance, pale and dark pink Sedums and a white cosmos.
